Many of us will associate Turmeric with our favourite curry dish. Yet, the benefits of turmeric are more than just a delicious meal. This herb has been at the heart of Ayurvedic medicine for millennia. People used it to treat, and help to prevent, a wide range of illnesses.
We are now aware in the Western World of Alzheimer’s and it’s devastating effects on the people over 65. Yet, it is shocking when comparing the situation of Alzheimer’s in India, against some countries in the Western World.
In India, Alzheimer’s disease is relatively uncommon. Seniors (specifically people over the age of 65) living in rural areas of India have a 0.84% chance of developing Alzhheimer’s. This figure rises to 2.4% for those living in the cities of India.
If we compare these findings to a similar group in the United States, something becomes quite disturbing. Once again, those living in rural areas are less likely to suffer from the disease. But they are still FIVE times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than those living in Indian rural areas.
Yet, it is in the cities where you see quite frightening statistics. The chance of developing Alzheimer’s in an average American city can reach 17%! Yes, 17% compare to the 2.4% risk of the people living in urban area in India!
Alzheimer’s is thought to be the result of the build up of amyloid beta. It is a protein which causes plaque to form around cells in the brain. These unwanted proteins create toxic by-products which cause the brain cells to deteriorate and then, well, die.
This is where the benefits of turmeric, or its compound, get in. While Turmeric has not been proven to cure Alzheimer’s, there is a great deal of evidence that it can help prevent the disease. Turmeric contains the antioxidant curcumin, which has radical scavenging properties. Thus, curcumin can help prevent the damages caused to our body by free radicals.
Well, curries do contain Turmeric and it will, for sure, help you on your way.
Don’t get me wrong, I love curries, and a lot of my friends do, too. But to get visible benefits you will need a dose of around 500mg, three times a day with food. One teaspoon of turmeric powder has approximately 100mg of curcumin. OK, I can get away with putting 5 teaspoons of turmeric in my curries. But hey, ask yourselves, how many days in a row can you go by eating curries?
Not to mention, our body needs a varied diet to be at its best…
Don’t worry, that’s where Turmeric supplement comes handy. Best thing about the supplement is that the ingredients are usually organic and are not industrially farmed. Industrially farmed crops can have lower nutrition content, and the benefits will be diminished.
Again, if you can, eating 1 or 2 teaspoons of turmeric a day already helps keep your body healthy (and curries taste amazing).
